A Jasper County judge sentenced a 60-year-old man this week to four years in prison on a conviction for failing to register as a sex offender when he moved to Joplin in December 2021. Judge Dean Dankelson found Stephen J. Engleman guilty of the violation in a bench trial in November. At his sentencing hearing Monday in Jasper County Circuit Court, Dankelson assessed Engleman the prison time. The defendant was convicted in 1991 of assault with intent to commit rape of a 45-year-old woman in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and was required by law to register with the sheriff's office in any county in Missouri in which he resides.
